Block Rabies - Medication Tracking
BlockRabies is an integrated One Health application targeting dog-mediated rabies, which causes roughly 60,000 human deaths globally per year, with most cases occurring in Africa and Asia. Funded by the EU through EDCTP2 (project CSA2018HS-2517) and running from 2020–2024, it was led by Prof. Jakob Zinsstag of Swiss TPH, with pilots in Mali (Bamako) and Côte d'Ivoire (Bouaké, San Pedro). The principal investigator describes it as the world's first digital application that registers both the patient and the rabid dog that bit him or her, linking public health, veterinary services, and the vaccine supply chain in a single workflow.
dHealth (formerly the HIT Foundation) provided the blockchain infrastructure. The Swiss companies Codebar Solutions and dHealth, recognised for their expertise in software development and blockchain technology, are behind the development of the BlockRabies application. dHealth's contribution covered vaccine supply-chain traceability so distributors and health centres can monitor stock and avoid waste of scarce post-exposure prophylaxis doses; on-chain anchoring of bite events, animal status, and vaccine handovers for tamper-resistant cross-sectoral records; and auditable, independently verifiable data in contexts where institutional trust and information systems are fragile. Project partners include Swiss TPH, USTTB, LCV, INHP, MIRAH, CSRS, Institut Pasteur, and codebar Solutions, with vaccine donations from Sanofi Pasteur and Bavarian Nordic.
EDCTP funding ended in 2024, but the platform remains operational. Partners are now in discussions on an ambitious pan-African Stop Rabies initiative to scale the model continent-wide and contribute to the WHO target of eliminating dog-mediated human rabies by 2030. The BlockRabies experience also feeds directly into the credential, attestation, and supply-chain primitives now formalised in the dHealth Protocol and reused across dHealth Intelligence.

AI-Assisted Prescription Management
dHealth Intelligence is deployed at APODRO Apotheken Drogerien (Rüti, Switzerland) to support prescription management workflows for home nursing services (Spitex). When updated prescriptions or medication changes are delivered to the pharmacy, dHealth Intelligence analyses the new orders, reconciles them against the patient's existing medication plan, and generates a CHMED16-compliant QR code containing the consolidated plan. Hence, making the data portable and interoperable across the Swiss healthcare system.
Human in the loop by design. The agent supports pharmacists; it does not decide. Every analysis, reconciliation, and update is reviewed and confirmed by a qualified pharmacist before any change takes effect. AI accelerates and structures the work, but professional judgment and accountability remain entirely with APODRO's team.
Data stays under the pharmacy's control. Patient data is held on APODRO's own systems or in storage that they control. Processing only happens when a pharmacist actively triggers a request, with end-to-end encrypted transmission limited to that single query and no persistent storage on dHealth servers. No logs containing personal data are created, and no customer data is used to train AI models. The architecture is compliant with the revised Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (nDSG), including requirements for processing sensitive health data under Art. 9 nDSG.

Optimise HomeCare Registrations
dHealth Intelligence supports Spitex Biel, a home nursing organisation in Biel, Switzerland, in producing the Bedarfsmeldeformular (BMF), the care needs assessment and service plan created for every client. The solution structures and standardises the translation of diagnoses into nursing services by combining data from various sources.

How it works. The nurse loads available client data into the dHealth Intelligence app. The system compares it against interRAI and lists missing assessment points — cognition, mobility, continence, social environment, living situation to prepare a focused home visit. After the visit, dHealth Intelligence enriches the completed record according to regulatory requirements, then proposes evidence-based goals, and concrete service components.

Human in the loop. Every AI proposal is reviewed, supplemented, or rejected by the nursing professional, who finalises the BMF. Clinical responsibility stays with the nurse, the agent assists, the professional decides.

Data stays under Spitex Biel's control. Transmission is end-to-end encrypted, processing is user-initiated and limited to the single request, and no persistent storage, personally identifiable logs, or training on client data takes place on dHealth servers. Under the revised Swiss Data Protection Act (nDSG), Spitex Biel acts as controller (Art. 5 lit. j) and dHealth Intelligence as processor (Art. 9).
